By the Editor – CLP

“What we read – often the fact that we have it in print to read at all – can be said to depend as much on the editor as the author. Ideally, though, I must admit it is the former and not the latter who is unknown. Ordinarily, the editor’s task is to blend into the landscape of the work he or she edits, to disappear in the co-accomplishment of the author’s best purpose. Whether or not this is finally the case in these pages, the reader is free to speculate. I am afraid I have come to take it for granted.”
